Three Springs

A nine-metre border in a small back garden, planted and replanted over three years.

About

Along the south-west fence of a small semi-detached garden there is a border nine metres long and about 1.8 metres deep, on clay that bakes in summer and sulks in winter. When we arrived it was couch grass and buried paving. It is now in its third growing season as a mixed perennial border, and a third of what I planted in the first autumn is no longer where I put it, or anywhere at all.

These pages record the plan, the planting, and the repeated moving of plants that is apparently what a border actually is. I keep a graph-paper plan in the shed, a photograph from the same spot every Sunday, and a list of what flowered when. None of it is advice from a designer; it is one border and a lot of digging things up.
